Thailand Gap Internships- 2009 at a Glance…

As 2009 draws to a close, the staff from Thailand Gap Year Internships is able to look back at a really successful year. Just yesterday marked the end of the 2009 season for instructor training on the island. Once again the TGI guys stood out! Darius and Mark’s scuba diving internships on Koh Tao have been very popular as the quality instruction that they’ve been providing for the last 10 years has gained them a great reputation in the industry.

This year they have conducted 12 Koh Tao IDC’s (Instructor Development Courses) with a total of 95 candidates. Remarkably, each of the candidates were successful on the PADI Instructor Exam giving them by far the island’s best succcess rate at 100%! They’ve also certified over 100 PADI Divemasters.

Our Professional Underwater Video Trainers at Oceans Below have produced 21 quality Pro HD Underwater Videographers in 2009. They’ve recently completed the BSAC Pro Underwater Video Manual and designed the industry’s only professional-level marine video course.

2010 will be an exciting year for them as they will be offering a new dive internship option which will further prepare divers to film documentary style movies and will focus on creating a showreel. They will also begin a new advanced video course to be run twice a year which will develop skills for making broadcast quality movies using the Sony EX 1 camera and Gates underwater housing.

The Monsoon Gym and Muay Thai internships have also proven to be a hit with many people coming for training in the fantastic martial art! The fight nights have been a great excuse for the whole staff of TGI and the interns to get together for a fun evening out and a few drinks.

Monica and Eusebio who run the freediving courses have also had a great year. In addition to training many people to professional levels of freediving, they’ve both been able to extend their own personal limits both in breathhold time and depth. Eusebio’s personal best of 72 meters is phenomenal while Monica is now able to hold her breath for nearly 7 minutes!

Darius and Elisabeth will soon be organizing a Christmas party for the whole group with drinks and a barbecue.

We all look forward to 2010 and the construction of our new TGI internship house which will be a great way for people on the various courses to get together and socialize!
