Happy New Year from Thailand Gap Internships!

Just as 2009 ended with a “Bang!”, so has 2010 begun. The New Year’s Eve party on Sairee Beach was spectacular if a bit less busy this year than in years past. It could have had something to do with the 4-day trance party being held up in the mountains. Not exactly sure what that was about, I think perhaps some zombied-out hippies got lost on their way to the Koh Phangan Full Moon Party!

Most of the sensible people spent the Koh Tao New Year between Vibe Bar and Fizz Bar on the beach. The weather was beautiful  and the sky was alight with fireworks and Thai “Sky Lanterns”. We had great music, food and drinks and more than a little dancing into the wee hours of the morning.

If the party was lacking a few people, they showed up soon after. The island’s gone absolutely mental with people looking to take advantage of some of the best diving conditions in ages and the chance to see bull sharks and whalesharks together on a single dive! I think in my time here, I haven’t seen so many arrivals in a single day!

Koh Tao’s, to date, ‘friendly’ Bull Sharks!

The internships have started spectacularly for 2010, as well. Today, Colby took a break from his PADI Divemaster course to begin the BSAC Professional HD Underwater Videographer training with our video team at Oceans Below. He’s been joined by Jenny, a Divemaster from another dive centre on the island. The pro video course instructors have had a great year with many new projects and lots of trainees.

Simon and Alvin- our friendly ‘Land Sharks’…

We also welcomed a trio of Kiwis- Andy, Tim and Joe, who are here to complete the PADI Divemaster and Instructor courses. Soon they’ll be joined by a few Canadians- Mike and Brad.  Our TGI team of Mark and Darius have also had a tremendous year- training hundreds of people to professional levels over the year with an outstanding 100% pass rate on the PADI Instructor Exam!

The Muay Thai camp has seen many trainees coming through in 2009 and we’ve been proud to add their programs to the other great opportunities we offer our interns.

So, Happy New Year from all the TGI staff! We look forward to helping many more people achieve their goals in 2010!
