Thailand Gap Internships- Pro Videographer/ DM Tells of Her Summer

I came down to Koh Tao at the end of May having enrolled in a gap year internship through Thailand Gap Internships (TGI). I’ve been so very impressed with the efficiency of the resort as well as the friendly atmosphere and great staff.

Before I began my PADI Divemaster Internship, I completed the Professional Underwater Videographer course. After spending the entire summer with the team at TGI and Oceans Below, it was with a heavy heart that I finally said goodbye. I’ve had so many great experiences, both in the field of HD Underwater Videography and professional dive training.

I leave with a great breadth of knowledge and skills that will help me tremendously in the future. The whole staff was friendly and not only made me feel respected, but earned my respect as well. The video team exposed me to the many secrets of filming and editing with HD underwater video equipment. It was a wonderful program and I filmed some truly amazing things- including the whalesharks and bull sharks! After I had finished, I was able to get lots of paid work during the 1 month internship and even afterwards- while I completed my DM course, I was still able to take days out to work for Oceans Below.

Leila, hard at work on the boat…

Then I began my DM internship. Divemaster is the first professional leadership level on the PADI ladder. There is a lot of new stuff to learn- decompression theory, physics, physiology equipment parts and maintenance as well as the role of the PADI Divemaster. Things seemed a bit daunting at first, but the presentations put on by the staff were top-notch. The material was well covered and many examples were given so that at the end of each session, everyone felt confident with the material.

One of the best parts of the DM program, I’d say, was the camaraderie that existed between all the DMTs (Divemaster Trainees). Everyone was more than willing to help each other out. Much fun was had both in and out of the water. The staff was also very approachable and gladly provided any help that they could.

…and underwater…

TGI provided everything I had been hoping for in an internship, and then some. I look back fondly on all the experiences I had this summer. I recommend Thailand Gap Internships to all- whether it be a Videography, Muay Thai, Freediving, PADI Divemaster/ Instructor or Marine Conservation internship, these guys maintain a constant level of excellence, professionalism and fun.

Thank you TGI for an awesome summer! I will never forget you…

Goodbye to our ‘Lady in Red’!
