Competent Crew Course: Overview
Our 5 day competent crew course takes you through both theory and practical sessions of Ocean Sailing.
You’ll get build up confidence and hours of hands on experience sailing the Yun Khan Yacht in the coastal waters around Koh Tao, and will build up a comprehensive working knowledge of important principles, techniques and equipment required for safe ocean sailing.
On completion of the 5 day sailing course you’ll receive the ‘Ocean Hiker Card’, (equivalent to the RYA Competent Crew qualification).

Thailand Sailing Course - Specifics
The competent crew course focuses on all the basic theory and practical application you need to be able to sail safely.
During sailing course we focus on giving you as much hands on experience as possible. But please note, in 5 days we’re not going to be able to train you to become a full blown yacht skipper! The competent crew course gives you a foundation in ocean sailing, giving you the important basics and allowing you to function as a crew member.
The topics and techniques we’ll be covering during the sailing course will include:
- Commonly encountered nautical terms, including parts of the boat, rigging and sails
- Main types of sail boats and common rigging configurations
- Handling sails and common sail types
- Chart Work and Navigation at Sea [Including GPS usage, digital charts etc]
- Using a VHF Radio
- Safety Equipment & Precautions
- Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting
- Man overboard maneuver
- Knots and Rope Work
- Anchoring and Mooring a yacht
- Weather forecasting, meteorology and the Beaufort scale
- Rules of the road, manners and customs
- Using a tender
SY Yun Khan | Sailing Course Thailand
The 5 day sailing course will be conducted aboard the SY Yun Khan training vessel, sailing in the tropical Gulf of Thailand around Koh Tao's coastal waters.
The Yun Khan is 34’ Aussie built Boden Temptress, with a capacity of 10 people plus captain. The yacht perfectly suited to the competent crew course as she employs the most common rigging configuration found in the sailing world.
Yun Khan is comfortable with double cabin, marine W/C, swimmer/diver platform, navigation and communication equipment and emergency equipment for ocean voyages. She is capable of sailing at a cruising speed of 5 knots.
Her sailing robe is selected based on wind and weather conditions, with our inventory including the mainsail, Genoa, asymmetric spinnaker, jibs (big, small and storm) and Try sail. During your competent crew course you'll take part in reviewing weather conditions and deciding the best sail configuration.
Accommodation
This sailing course package includes 5 nights accommodation.
You'll get your own fan room - clean and comfortable with en-suite western bathroom, within close walking distance of the training center. Plus everything you need is nearby (bars and restaurants, shops, ATMs etc).
